Cathedral of Brandenburg an der Havel – Special exhibition by the cathedral museum

New special exhibition May to October 2020

“Umdenken – Gedenkkultur am Dom zu Brandenburg” (Rethinking – Commemorative Culture at Brandenburg Cathedral) Every community defines and shapes its own culture of commemoration. A historic event and a story can be as identity-forming as a person or an object. Shared rituals, commemorative ceremonies, remembrance festivals and anniversaries celebrate communal memory. In particular, monuments become imprinted on the collective memory of a people. Commemoration follows societal, historical, social and political changes. Commemoration can sometimes be organised through official or religious channels, sometimes as propaganda and sometimes as quite a private affair. Commemoration is an opportunity to try and learn from history.
At the cathedral, a rather exclusive culture of commemoration is practised, based on a specific group of people and not the broader public. Consequently, the monuments are not in the village centre or a large square in the town. They are as close to the church building as possible or by or behind the walls of the cathedral.
Starting with remembering the founder of the Bishopric of Brandenburg, Kaiser Otto I., how the Hohenzollern presented themselves down through the centuries and the question of how monuments and remembrance should be handled in the present and future are addressed in this exhibition on the culture of commemoration.
Walking around this special exhibition, you can learn a lot about which communities and historic events are reflected in the memorial sites and monuments.
At the end, we want to ask the following controversial question with our visitors:
Do the monuments represent modern remembrance or are the just witnesses to a time gone by that need to be updated?

We ask for your understanding if the applicable opening hours are reduced due to church services or special events.
