In October 2013, after 3.5 years of construction, the new state parliament building in the historical guise of the Potsdam City Palace was completed. According to the plans of the architect Prof. Peter Kulka, the entire outer shape of the Knobelsdorff facade was restored, including the inner courtyard. Today, the most modern state parliament building in the Federal Republic is located inside. The Potsdam City Palace was once the main work of the Frederick Rococo. It received its final appearance under Friedrich II and Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff in the years 1744-1751. The baroque Hohenzollern palace was destroyed by a British air raid in April 1945 and was blown up by the SED Politburo in 1959/1960. The Fortuna portal, the former entrance gate of the palace, was rebuilt true to the original in 2002 and forms the main entrance to the state parliament building today. The entrance area, the so-called Knobelsdorff staircase, forms the link between the historic facade and modern interior design. The plenary hall, the heart of the building, is located on the 1st floor. In total 400 offices are occupied by the political groups, the state parliament administration and the state audit office. The inner courtyard, the Knobelsdorff staircase, the foyer with an interactive building model, the cafeteria, the state parliament restaurant and the roof terrace are open to the public from Monday to Friday (except on public holidays) without prior notice. In addition, extensive parliamentary didactic programmes for groups and school classes are realized
by the visitor service of the state administration. Individual visitors have the opportunity to take open tours of the building on Fridays. For this, registration on the website of the state parliament is necessary.
