On a day out in Werder (Havel), you should definitely visit the Heilig-Geist-Kirche church. It is already the third church on this site on the town’s island. The current building in the Gothic style with a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross was built from 1856 to 1858. In 1980, the exterior was rebuilt and the interior was rebuilt from 1989 to 1994.

The altar table is made from stucco; the chancel was designed by F.W. Dankberg and is made of cast stone. In 1911, the coloured window was installed in the apse. It depicts the Ascension of Christ and the four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The painting “Christus als Apotheker” (Christ the Apothecary) was made famous far and wide by the writer and travel writer Theodor Fontane through his “Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg” (Walks through the March of Brandenburg). This was probably painted at the end of the 17th century.

The tower of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche church is about 50 metres high. Church services are regularly held there, as are exhibitions and concerts. The interior of the church is fascinating because of its great acoustics. The church is also open for special events, for example on the “Langen Nacht der Kirchen” (Long Night of the Churches).
